Japanese Beef Bowl Gyudon

Gyudon is a Japanese-styled beef stew served with rice. Gyudon in Japan is very popular and is a well-loved Japanese fast food!

Japanese-style Gyudon beef rice has the main ingredient of rice in a large and deep bowl, topped with beef cooked with onions and a sweet sauce made from  Dashi  (usually fish or seaweed dashi),  soy sauce and mirin (sweet wine). Those are also the main ingredients of Dashi Lab’s Japanese Sukiyaki Sauce.


140g Beef Shortplate 140g
55g Onion
2 stalks Green Onion
1 egg
1 bowl of Japanese rice (or any type of soft rice you prefer)
5g Japanese pink ginger (optional), Yellow Ginger
1 cup Water
55g (~4 tsp.) Japanese Sukiyaki Sauce (Dashi Lab)


Step 1: Process the materials
  • Thinly slice beef. If beef fat is available, chop it up and add to the oil for flavor.
  • Sliced onion, chopped green onion
  • Cut the yellow ginger into thin slices (the amount you want, does not need much)
Step 2
Dilute 55g sauce Sukiyaki with 1 cup of water (or you can add or reduce water depending on your preference on saltiness)
Step 3
Stir-fry beef fat with a little oil until the fat turns golden and then turn down the heat. Then add ginger to the pan and stir until fragrant. Turn the heat to medium, add the onion and stir until the onion turns transparent white.
Step 4
Pour the mixture of Sukiyaki sauce and water into the same pan. Then add the beef and cook with medium heat, skimming when boiling. Cook on low heat for about 10-15 minutes, until the water dries up a bit, the sauce absorbs well into the ingredients.
Step 5

Enjoy with hot rice, add egg yolk and red ginger for a completed dish.😋 (It’s also delicious with kimchi!)
